Clos De Napa Cellars Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 750mL 91 point Wine & Spirits Magazine
What a fantastic find! For this Cab, grapes were sourced from an outstanding family owned vineyard in the Rutherford AVA of Napa Valley. With mature vines almost 30 years of age, the vineyard is on a terraced hillside with well-drained soils of limestone and sandstone that let the roots go deep. Soaking up the late afternoon sun these grapes take on richness, intensity and nuance. Because these grapes were so full of expression the winemaking team (led by none other than Trevor Sheehan), decided to age only 60% in new French oak barrels for 12 months, while the rest aged for a bit in stainless steel and then in 3 year old oak barrels. This approach adds another layer to the finished wine while keeping the oak expression well integrated. The result is a wine that hits on all cylinders.
Wine & Spirits Magazine selected this as one of the "Best US Cabernets of 2019" and gave it a 91 point score. The wine shows aromas of brambly raspberry and lavender layered with toasty vanilla and toffee. Rich black plum and black cherry are at the forefront of a solid core of fruit that coats the palate, while an underlying note of mocha compliments the bold, firm texture and full body. Easy to enjoy right now with aeration but also a prime candidate to lay down in your cellar for 5-10 years.
